Oak Ridge Takes Down Atascocita 48-44

The Oak Ridge boys basketball team traveled to Atascocita and defeated the Eagles 48-44.

Looking up (literally), the War Eagles were able to chop down Atascocita’s tree toppers with some aggressive, albeit smart second half play. In improving to 14-7 overall, more important is their district record which is presently 2-1 and more than in the hunt in District 14-5A.

In catching Coach Stewart after he just got back from Austin and UT’s loss to UCONN, I suggested he write the meat of the Oak Ridge victory article. He obliged but I was skeptical at first as Science guys are usually not the greatest writers. As you will observe below, I tend to be wrong a lot.

A win at Atascocita (11-13 and 0-2) was a huge road win! They are huge! They start 6’5″, 6’5″, and 6’7″ and have another 6’7″ coming off the bench. Their two posts are monsters around the basket. We prepared well for them, but it is hard to show their size and athleticism in practice.

They outrebounded us badly in the 1st half, but we did the same to them in the 2nd half. Our big guys played really well in the 2nd half. Torrey Dickey really got us going in the 3rd quarter with some big rebounds and it was kind of contagious. Taw Mann, Terrell Lawrence, and Michael Butler really got after it on the boards in the 2nd half. That was the reason we won the game.

In the 1st half, we tried to out jump them, but in the 2nd half we really blocked out and kept their big guys off the boards.

I am really proud of how hard we fought all night. Even when we weren’t rebounding well or scoring, our defense was solid. We talk about our defense and effort being the two things we can control in a game. They were both good for 32 minutes Friday night.

D’Marcus Fitch, Marc Forson, and Chase Daniels really contained their athletic guards most of the night. Our guys were able to pressure them into some bad passes in the 4th quarter that helped us get the lead for good with 2:35 left in the game.

No one can describe a game better than the Coach!

With my being from Connecticut and obviously ecstatic over the UCONN win, I asked Coach what he thought of UCONN point guard, Kemba Walker. Coach Stewart said, “Two words, Allen Iverson”. Wow! That’s a big compliment. Funny how my two words would have been “Marc Forson”.

Oak Ridge has The Woodlands at home on Tuesday. The Highlanders are having their best season in Coach Dale Reed’s successful tenure at TWHS. They come in with a 19-3 overall record and 2-0 in district. Can you say packed house?

Born and raised in New England, Doug promises he got to Texas as fast as he could. He earned the much needed "piece of paper" from Sam Houston State, proving to himself he could start and finish something. Doug's interests include coaching and playing any sport and still plays lacrosse competitively. He also enjoys going to dinner theaters, though he complains there just aren't enough of them in the area. Doug was brought up in a cultured environment, having suffered through dozens of symphonies and operas with his way too over-educated mother. At the end of the day, Doug is just a dad and husband and claims to be good at both.
