The Lady War Eagle softball team participated in the Cy-Fair tournament over the weekend and brought back second place hardware.
In bracket play, Oak Ridge was undefeated, as they came out on top against MacArthur, Cy-Fair, Conroe, and Atascocita. In the final, the girls faced a ridiculous Klein Collins contingent and were defeated 10-6. Danielle White struck out five Lady Tigers in absorbing the loss for Oak Ridge. Taylor Grissom got the win on the hill for KC.
1ST INNING
The Lady War Eagles attacked in the first inning with an impressive lead off triple from senior Kris Davila to start the championship game. Davila scored on a fielders choice (4-3) by Taylor Duck. After a lead off K for White, the Lady Tigers answered back with a single, followed by a HR over the left field wall making the score 2-1 KC after the first inning.
2nd INNING
Taylor Hastings led off the 2nd inning with a single and scored on a triple by Carley Latta. Lauren Hoffman shot a base hit into left field scoring Latta to put 2 more runs on the board for OR in the 2nd inning. A lead off fly out and 2 K’s make it a quick inning for White and the Lady War Eagles.
3RD INNING
Danielle White powers a single to right field in the 3rd inning to begin another attack against the Lady Tigers. Sydni Smith pinch runs for pitcher Danielle White and scores on a triple by Taylor Hastings. Latta and Hoffman each hit a single scoring Hastings. KC makes a pitching change from Taylor Atkinson to Grissom. Grissom racks up a pair of K’s to end the inning.
KC had a lead off walk, K, base hit + 2 bases on an error scoring 1. Another hit, fielders choice, and double scores another run. Pop up to SS to end the inning.
4TH INNING
Scoreless on both sides with White picking up another K.
5TH INNING
OR scoreless, but Lady Tigers go on the attack. A lead off pop up to catcher Davila started the inning off on the right foot. After a base hit and a fielders choice to create out #2, Oak Ridge seemed to have the inning under control, but the Lady Tigers were just getting started. A base hit by December Rivers and a triple by Payton Tanley began to rock the Lady War Eagles. An error allowed for another runner on the bags… runners on 1st and 3rd. The lead-off hitter for KC (Taylor Atkinson) had been fanned 3 times by White in the game, but the 4th time was a charm. She produced a power single to center scoring 2 more runs for KC. A pop out to centerfield ends the productive inning for KC.
6TH INNING
Alayna Ammons leads off the 6th inning for Oak Ridge with a single, followed by another single by Erin Miranda. A walk to Kris Davila loads the bases. A passed ball scores Ammons and moves the runners over, but Grissom retires the side with a strike out and 2 fly outs.
After two quick outs and a walk, a double then produced a run. A play by right fielder Taylor Ervin gets the batter out at 3rd base (9-2-5).
The Lady War Eagles went scoreless in the 7th to end the game.
The KC Lady Tigers had previously beaten Oak Ridge 12-7 in the Klein ISD tournament the previous week. Oak Ridge battled back to win the consolation bracket over Splendora Wildcats in that tournament.
**3 of the top 4 finishers at this tournament were CISD schools. 1st KC, 2nd OR, 3rd Kingwood, 4th Atascocita.
KC 2-0-3-0-4-1
OR 1-2-2-0-0-1-0
WP: Taylor Grissom, 4 K’s
LP: Danielle White, 5 K’s
OR Leaders: Carley Latta 2-2, 2 Walks; Taylor Hastings 3-4 (1B, 2B, 3B – just shy of hitting for the cycle)
Other noteworthy news: Oak Ridge captured 17th place at the Bryan-College Station tournament on February 17-19. OR dropped the 2nd game to Brazoswood HS 2-1 in the tournament and battled back to win their final game over an impressive Alvin HS. The Lady War Eagles had nice wins over Midway, Clements, Clark, Ridge Point, and Alvin High Schools.
Since Coach Brimberry has taken over this program, this is the highest placement Oak Ridge has achieved in these 3 tournaments. 17th in the BCS tournament, Consolation bracket winners (dropped first game of tourney to KC), and 2nd in the Cy-Fair tournament.
