The Oak Ridge Lady War Eagles took on the District 14-5a newcomers, the Atascocita Lady Eagles, on Friday night at Atascocita. The game started off with a bang from Oak Ridge senior Kris Davila’s lead-off home run blast over the towering left field wall, quickly putting the ladies on top after just two pitches from Atascocita starting pitcher Kristin Hebert.
Atascocita answered back in the first inning with a run of their own. Lead off batter Kelly Baker got a blooper hit to left field off starting Lady War Eagle pitcher Danielle White. A fielders choice moved Baker over, and a base hit from Hebert scored the first one for the Lady Eagles.
Atascocita added an additional run in the 4th inning after Leah Doyle reached on from an error. Two hits later and it was 2-1 Atascocita after four. White lasted four complete innings with five strike outs for The Ridge, and Taylor Hastings took over on the mound in the 5th.
Hebert continued to keep the Lady War Eagles off balance at the plate until the 7th inning. Oak Ridge started off the 7th with a lead off walk for Carley Latta. Two fielder’s choices and a double by Alayna Ammons scored Latta to tie the game 2-2, and the game headed into extra innings.
To start off the 8th, Davila smoked another awe-inspiring lead-off home run over the left field wall and began the rally for The Ridge. Latta loaded the bases with a walk after back to back hits from Taylor Duck and White, and a single by Hastings gave the Lady War Eagles a two-run lead. Ammons, a junior, stepped up to the plate and pelted a shot to left field clearing the bases, and Oak Ridge went into the bottom of the 7th suddenly up 7-2.
Hastings coaxed two popups and a strikeout to seal the deal. The Ridge is now 3-0 in District contests and will face the #1 state ranked Lady Highlanders of The Woodlands next Tuesday at Oak Ridge.
