The Oak Ridge War Eagles introduced themselves to the Seguin Matadors Saturday morning in Oak Ridge’s final game of four in the Pflugerville-Connally Classic. A rude introduction it was as Oak Ridge served Seguin a 14 – 1 salty taste of Houston Area 5-A baseball.
Seguin’s ace pitcher, Gerlich was tagged for six runs off six Oak Ridge hits while the Matador defense made four errors during his three inning appearance. Having only been out of basketball for eight days, it should be no surprise to find Gerlich’s numbers improving tremendously in future outings. Seguin used three additional pitchers through the six inning contest and each found Oak Ridge’s batters pounding the ball at will.
Oak Ridge booked 15 hits in the rout. Of particular note, Blake Stoehr was three for four at the plate with another homerun and two doubles. Cody Althouse was three for four. Sophomore Brandon Navarro and Freshman Mario Garza were both two for four at the plate. Again, all Oak Ridge batters tallied at least one hit each.
Oak Ridge pitcher Tyler Cook returned to form throwing a three hitter off 64 pitches for his first complete game of the season. Cook pitched to contact with his arm-side hard running fast ball orchestrating 15 ground outs from the 21 batters he faced.
In summary, the Oak Ridge arms seem tuned and rested, their bats are strong and hot, and the gloves are handy from a grueling off-season conditioning program and 14 pre-season games. The players are primed and ready to begin District 14-5A play which begins with a Tuesday night opener against College Park.
The first District home game is Thursday night against Conroe. Come on out and support these kids and their coaches for their hard work, good game and dedication to the Oak Ridge High School baseball program. Let The Games Begin!
