War Eagle Defense Shows Heart, But Wears Down Against Nimitz

The Oak Ridge War Eagles (0-4) traveled to Thorne Stadium with high hopes of picking up their first W, but it wasn’t to be as things fell apart against the Aldine Nimitz Cougars, losing 37-0.

Starting quarterback Colby Kitterman left the game early with concussion like symptoms, and the offense just couldn’t get things going in a game that saw Oak Ridge gather up just five first downs.

Jacob Norton came on in relief of Kitterman, going 10-20 for 76 yards and three interceptions. It was a tall order for Norton who hadn’t seen much time under center in the first three games of the season.

The War Eagle defense played gallantly in keeping Oak Ridge in the game at halftime, 10-0. Shortly after the halftime activities concluded, the offense made the defense keep working hard going three and out on several possessions. The result was the defense finally running out of gas as Nimitz (3-1) rolled up three straight TD’s in the fourth quarter to break open a fairly tight game.

Aldine Nimitz features a run oriented attack, running 51 times for 351 yards. Darrell Stewart carried the ball for 133 yards and scored Nimitz’s first touchdown on a 15 yard run. Dre’Vian Young ran for 120 yards and scored on a 68 yard run early in the fourth quarter, initiating Oak Ridge’s demise. Aldine passed for just 31 yards.

Oak Ridge’s Jason Simmons and Jamarcus Durst ran for 20 and 14 yards respectively. Durst also had four receptions for twenty three yards. Jonathan Jackson had two for eighteen yards and Devon Herter two for seventeen yards. With 106 yards of total offense, there isn’t much to report offensively.

The defense hung tough but were on the field too much in eventually giving up 382 yards.

Next up for Oak Ridge is a District 14-5A clash with Bryan on Friday the 28th, 7:30pm at Moorhead.

Oak Ridge is now 0-4 with little or no momentum going into district play. When the chips are down and things don’t seem like they can get much worse, you find out who your friends are apart from your superficial acquaintances. Let’s show this team we are their friends through thick and thin and support them the whole journey. The support has been there as Oak Ridge fans outnumbered Nimitz fans at their place. Oak Ridge has an excellent future and we are fortunate to be on the ground floor to see the whole trip.

If you were not able to attend Saturday night’s festivities, here are a few photos that capture what went on.

See you at Moorhead next week!

Doug Sarant, Oak Ridge Now

Born and raised in New England, Doug promises he got to Texas as fast as he could. He earned the much needed "piece of paper" from Sam Houston State, proving to himself he could start and finish something. Doug's interests include coaching and playing any sport and still plays lacrosse competitively. He also enjoys going to dinner theaters, though he complains there just aren't enough of them in the area. Doug was brought up in a cultured environment, having suffered through dozens of symphonies and operas with his way too over-educated mother. At the end of the day, Doug is just a dad and husband and claims to be good at both.
