Oak Ridge powerlifting is off to a good start! On January 12, the War Eagle boys team traveled to Houston for an eight team meet and came away with a respectable 2nd place finish.
In powerlifting, the athletes are classified by their weight. The weight classes range from 114 to 275-plus pounds. Each team is allowed eleven lifters and not allowed to have more than three in any one weight class.
The medalist’s included Matt Rice in the 123lb class who placed 4th. Hayden Gula in his first ever meet placed 5th in the 132lb class. In the 148lb division, Oak Ridge had two medalist’s in Tyler Marcel (3rd) and Tanner Kuhle (5th). In the 181lb class Jonathan Voltaire stepped up to the challenge and earned himself a 3rd place medal. In the 220lb class, Justin Edwards was able to hang on and earn himself a 5th place finish with his total.
By far and away, Oak Ridge shined the most in the 198lb and 242lb classes. In the 198’s, George Stephenson totaled 1330lbs and placed 1st in his division. Stephenson is currently ranked 1st in the region in his class. In the 242lb division Justin Latonero totaled 1445lbs placing him 1st overall. Latonero is also at the top of his class in the region.
For the girls, Britney Northern and Jennifer Ramirez came in 2nd in their respective divisions.
Powerlifting at the high school level is a club sport that operates under the auspices of the THSPA (Texas High School Powerlifting Association). For addition information, you can go to www.thspa.us. The girls are under the THSWPA.
