Braden Letney and the Oak Ridge War Eagles (2-0) traveled to Aldine Independent School District’s Thorne Stadium to take on the Aldine Mustangs (0-2) and doubled their 2012 win total by hammering the Mustangs 31-10, and continuing the Rise of the Ridge.

Oak Ridge received the opening kickoff and Letney proceeded to lead the War Eagles down the field with relative ease culminating with the Oak Ridge quarterback scampering 33 yards to pay dirt on the fifth play from scrimmage and only 4:33 gone in the first quarter. Patrick Coale’s successful extra point made it 7-0 Oak Ridge.

Oak Ridge’s stingy defense led by outside linebacker Clayton Grett set the tone for the night as the Mustangs were three and out on their first possession.

Both defenses held their ground for the next 13 minutes of play when Aldine kicker, Javier Rojas put the Mustangs on the board with a 34 yard field goal making the score 7-3 Oak Ridge at 9:02 of the second quarter.

After both defensive units traded stops, Oak Ridge got the ball back late in the second quarter and a Letney to Riley McKnight 43 yard scoring strike along with a Coale extra point made it 14-3 War Eagles at halftime.

In the third quarter, Oak Ridge started to dominate as Kwame Etwi and Justin Edwards ran for 39 and four yard TD runs respectively. Mr Automatic, Patrick Coale drilled both extra points and the third quarter ended with the War Eagles leading 28-3.

Dereck Rush unloaded the bench in the fourth quarter displaying how much depth his team has. A Coale 22 yard field goal at 9:35 of the final quarter and an Aldine TD compliments of a nine yard hook up from QB Kendarian Carter to wide-out, Timothy Calhoun with 5:16 remaining concluded the scoring for the evening.

Why is this team so much more successful than last year’s War Eagles? Coach Rush said, “The team is moving in the right direction now. Just having a full offseason is the biggest difference this year.”

Letney was 2-7 for 86 yards with one TD pass and the rushing TD. Jacob Norton got some reps under center as he went 3-3 for 18 yards.

Letney also led all rushers with 89 yards on 11 carries. Edwards ran six times for 29 yards. Demarcus Durst ran once for 12 yards. Etwi caught a pass for 37 yards and McKnight had a lone reception for a TD.

Aldine QB, Kandarian Carter threw for 150 yards on 9-25 passing. He was the leading rusher with 23 yards on 13 carries showing just how stingy the Oak Ridge defense was all night.

Oak Ridge outgained Aldine in total yardage 353 to 192 with 12 first downs to the Mustangs 10.

Oak Ridge next plays Stratford at home next Friday 7:30pm at Woodforest Stadium.

Doug Sarant, Oak Ridge Now

Born and raised in New England, Doug promises he got to Texas as fast as he could. He earned the much needed "piece of paper" from Sam Houston State, proving to himself he could start and finish something. Doug's interests include coaching and playing any sport and still plays lacrosse competitively. He also enjoys going to dinner theaters, though he complains there just aren't enough of them in the area. Doug was brought up in a cultured environment, having suffered through dozens of symphonies and operas with his way too over-educated mother. At the end of the day, Doug is just a dad and husband and claims to be good at both.
