Lady War Eagles Suffer Loss to Kingwood

The visiting Kingwood Lady Mustangs rode into town with one thing on their mind — maintaining their second place ranking in District 14-5A. Oak Ridge had two things on their mind — not to let that happen and to redeem themselves after the Lufkin loss. However, in this fickle game of softball, you win by the sword and die by the sword and the swords, aka “bats”, once again waned for the Lady War Eagles.

It has been a struggle of late to manufacture runs for the Lady War Eagles in these crucial district games. Come from behind wins have put two W’s in the column for the struggling team who are left wondering where the hits have disappeared to. On this night, Kingwood would pepper enough runs on the board to take the W with them and leave Ridge with their third district loss.

After a quiet first inning, Kingwood came out in the 2nd with a lead off hit from senior Audrey Winders. A wild pitch from Oak Ridge starter Taylor Hastings moved Winders over to 2nd with no outs.  A line drive out to Hastings caught Winders off the bag but a failed pick-off attempt ultimately moved Winders to 3rd. A well executed bunt-and-run play by the Lady Mustangs made it a 1-0 ball game after the second frame.

Kingwood scrapped another run in the 4th inning after consecutive hits from pitcher Cassie McClure and senior Jordann Jezek. A fielding error in the outfield scored McClure that put the Lady Mustangs ahead 2-0 after four innings of play.

Oak Ridge appeared to have a spark in the 6th inning when lead-off hitter Kris Davila sent a rocket out to left field for a standup double. A fielders choice from Taylor Ervin moved Davila over to 3rd and another attempted fielders choice placed senior Jessi Burnett on first base. However, the rally was killed after an untimely double play was produced off an infield grounder.

With two outs in the 7th inning, Kingwood posted two more runs off consecutive hits from lead off hitter Anna Olejniczak and Jess Rubin. Olejniczak moved to 2nd on her hit from an outfield error and moved to 3rd on Rubin’s hit.  Kaitlin Munoz hit a double to left center, scoring Olejniczak and Rubin before getting thrown out at 3rd on an 8-4-5 play.  Despite Oak Ridge’s five batter appearance in the bottom of the 7th, McClure handled the Lady War Eagles one pitch at a time and produced a strike out to end the game.

Oak Ridge is now 3-3 in district play and sits in 3rd place behind The Woodlands and Kingwood. The second round of district action will begin on Friday, 4/1, as the Lady War Eagles host the visiting College Park Lady Cavaliers.

Oak Ridge       0 runs, 4 hits, 3 errors        0-0-0-0-0-0-0

Oak Ridge Edged by Lady Panthers

The Oak Ridge Lady War Eagles traveled to Lufkin on Tuesday and dropped a 4-3 heart breaker to the Lady Panthers. It was a hard loss for the young Oak Ridge team who have typically handled Lufkin with strong offensive results.

Ridge bats have been appearing late in district games, and the Lady War Eagles have managed to come from behind in two of the last four games played prior to Lufkin. The third time did not prove to be the charm.

Oak Ridge took an early lead with a lead-off walk to Kris Davila. A sacrifice bunt by Taylor Ervin, a base hit from Taylor Duck, and a RBI base hit from Carley Latta crossed Davila over the plate and produced the first run of the game. The Lady Panthers answered back quickly as Lufkin lead-off hitter Nicole Castillo stepped up to the plate and placed a base hit to left field. Lindsey Lyles reached on an error and Blaire Reynolds produced a walk from Oak Ridge pitcher Danielle White. A base hit from Angela Batson scored Castillo and the Lady Panthers were up 2-1 after the first inning of play.

Oak Ridge bats began to rattle in the 4th as Jessi Burnett and Alayna Ammons worked their way onto the bases. A single from Lauren Hoffman, RBI single from Davila, and an RBI single from Duck produced two more runs for the Lady War Eagles to put them ahead 3-2 at the end of four innings.

Ridge’s hopes of a come from behind win began to re-emerge. But the Lady Panthers had plans of their own and sealed the deal in the fifth inning off a single from Castillo and a home run shot from Lyles. Oak Ridge bats didn’t come through for an encore performance and the Lady War Eagles lost a huge one in this ever so tough District 14-5A race.

Oak Ridge has a district bye on Friday but will be playing the Hudson Hornets at Oak Ridge in two “Play for the Cure” games at 5:30p (JV) and 7:00p (V). The softball players will be wearing a ribbon of their choice
that represents a form of cancer that has stricken a loved one. Parents and players will be sporting a Play for the Cure shirt as well. Proceeds from the sale of the t-shirts will be donated to a selected foundation.

The next district game is Tuesday, March 29, at Oak Ridge. The Lady War Eagles will take on district newcomers, the Kingwood Mustangs.

ORHS Girls Soccer Completes Season

The Oak Ridge girls soccer team concluded their season with a 6-1 loss to The Woodlands Tuesday night and finished up with a respectable 8-10-8 overall record with their district mark being 1-7-4.

Coach Collins knew his team would finish one game out of the playoffs so he unloaded the bench on senior night.

“Our goals per game allowed was 1.38 and our goals per game scored was .88. We know we have to score more to be more successful next year. We will improve and we will be in the playoffs this time next year because we really have two positions to replace and I feel like we have and will get players that are ready to step into those positions.”

If you have had the pleasure to speak with Coach Collins, you know there isn’t a more sincere individual out there. Count on the girls making the playoffs next year.

Lady Highlanders Spring “Break” Oak Ridge 15-1

Things looked promising early on for the Oak Ridge Lady War Eagles as they hosted #1 state-ranked The Woodlands Lady Highlanders on Tuesday night. Consecutive hits from Ridge’s Taylor Ervin, Taylor Duck, and Danielle White (1-RBI) put the LWE’s on top 1-0 after the first inning of play.  It would be the only run Oak Ridge would plate in the six-inning game.

The Lady Highlanders rallied in the third inning scoring two runs off of a single from Kelsey Jolly and a double from Faith Bohack putting the Lady Highlanders on top 2-1 after the third inning.

The rallying continued for The Woodlands as the Lady Highlanders produced six runs in the fifth inning capitalizing on an error-filled outing by the LWE’s as Oak Ridge starting pitcher Taylor Hastings faced ten batters in the inning. The half-inning break for OR was short-lived in the bottom of the 5th as the go-to pitcher for TWHS, LSU-commit Paige McDuffie, sat down the next three Ooa Ridge batters consecutively.

The score was 8-0 heading into the top of the 6th inning and Oak Ridge needed to stop the bleeding. The big, ugly run-rule was staring the Lady War Eagles square in the face. Unfortunately for Oak Ridge, the onslaught continued as the red and green kicked off the sixth inning with a single and two doubles by Jolly, Bohack, and Alyssa Jorgenson respectively. Errors continued to plague the Lady War Eagles and the Lady Highlanders once again took every advantage handed to them as they posted up seven runs before the inning was all said and done.  McDuffie retired the Lady War Eagles 1-2-3 to end the game after six innings of play.

Oak Ridge slips to 2nd place in District play and will travel to Lufkin next Tuesday to face the Lady Panthers.

Girls Soccer Ties The Woodlands for First Time

About a week ago, the Oak Ridge girls soccer team did something that a soccer team has never done before at Oak Ridge High School. They tied state power, The Woodlands, 0-0.

Now, you’re thinking we here at Oak Ridge Now have had a problem in the past with the Smallville type thinking that existed in this area when Oak Ridge entered the ranks of 5A. We believe, like you do now that we should go into every contest thinking we can win.

The “Oh, we weren’t supposed to win but we kind of made it close so it’s all good” mentality is a thing of the past now and is only good for when you are trying to make yourself regurgitate.

Well, I am making an exception. Our awesome friends at Woodlands Online had it right when their headline read, ”Oak Ridge shocks The Woodlands”. Coach Dina Graves of The Woodlands is a friend of mine and I’ve been following her team for years. They are an excellent team and have been for her entire tenure at the big school. They don’t just have a few good players, every single one of their players is awesome and they play on the best select soccer teams this area has to offer. Not only that, but those girls go 100% of every minute of every game. I’m not saying every team over there plays like this because it depends on the coach. Rest assured both of their soccer teams do.

Coach Graves had some nice things to say about the Oak Ridge girls soccer program. “Hey, I am good with our tie. We took 27 shots to their 1 and it is not that we played bad, they just implemented their game plan to a tee!!

“I respect Coach Collins very much, he is a knowledgeable coach that does his homework and you could not ask for a more dedicated person to the girls soccer program at Oak Ridge. We have sat at games that we were both scouting talking x’s and o’s and also discussing our programs and the ups and downs of coaching in general. The truth is that we both “love” our jobs and our players and just want them to perform and execute our game plans.

“I told my girls that we can not walk out with our heads down because they had their backs against the wall and needed to “not” lose as they were trying to get into the playoffs. We on the other hand were working to put ourselves into a position to try and get a share of the district title with our next show down with Kingwood. But, like I told the girls, everything happens for a reason and tonight Oak Ridge needed that outcome more than we needed a victory!!”

The Oak Ridge girls have talent but they are not nearly to the level of The Woodlands. Coach Collins and the girls are working towards getting to that level but they have a ways to go. I’m not being rude, just honest. For these girls to hold this statewide power to zero goals was a monumental feat!

So, what has to go on for something like this to happen? It has something to do with what went on at the 1980 Winter Olympics when our college hockey players beat the best hockey team (The Soviets) ever assembled …These girls played with hearts the size of soccer balls … They believed in Coach Collins’ system and they executed. Both of these items have to go together for success on any kind of team.

It really was going on for Oak Ridge that night. We’re going to let the ever-enthusiastic Coach Collins have his say because, well, he deserves it:

“It has been a longtime since any soccer team at this school has tied The Woodlands or achieved any kind of result, so we are very fired up about getting this result against them. The Woodlands had the better of play but Katherine Tesno was a star in goal and really turned a lot of heads with her performance. She had at least eight very nice saves and was the sole reason we were able to stay in the game the first half.

In the second half, we changed our formation from a 3-5-2 to a 3-6-1 and really limited the dangerous shots that they had against us. Jade Sorensen was our lone forward up top but did a nice job of countering and putting some pressure on the Woodlands D. She almost won the game for us with a free kick in the last ten minutes, but The Woodlands keeper got a hand on the shot that was headed.

Lauren Gelormini was fantastic in the back playing defense. Nadine Berns suffered a broken nose during the game but yet stayed to root her team on before going to the hospital. She played a very tough game in the middle for us. Kamri Brown, Claire Schuman and Sherridan Vincent also played great for us. Dari Edens had the assignment of “man marking” their best player ( best forward in District ) during the game and she kept her from scoring.

Because of this result if we beat Lufkin Friday night we have a shot at the post season. It was Katherine’s second straight shut out. She shut down Atascocita 1-0 in the previous game and has established herself as one of the best keepers in the area.”

We blew some games we should have won early but we are really coming together right now behind the play of Katherine Tesno.”

Since this great effort last week, the girls were defeated by Lufkin, 2-0 to dim their playoff hopes. However, nothing can take away from the effort this team put together against a mammoth like The Woodlands.

This complete effort by the Lady War Eagles proves a few things … It doesn’t matter what people think will happen in any particular game … It doesn’t matter what the stat sheet reads before any particular game … It doesn’t matter who plays for what select team or who is going where to play in college … All that matters is that you go all out every second of every game you play. If athletes do this, when they look in the mirror after a contest, they will like what they see.

I think it’s safe to say these Lady War Eagles like what they see.

Lady War Eagle Bats Come Alive In Extra Innings

The Oak Ridge Lady War Eagles took on the District 14-5a newcomers, the Atascocita Lady Eagles, on Friday night at Atascocita. The game started off with a bang from Oak Ridge senior Kris Davila’s lead-off home run blast over the towering left field wall, quickly putting the ladies on top after just two pitches from Atascocita starting pitcher Kristin Hebert.

Atascocita answered back in the first inning with a run of their own. Lead off batter Kelly Baker got a blooper hit to left field off  starting Lady War Eagle pitcher Danielle White. A fielders choice moved Baker over, and a  base hit from Hebert scored the first one for the Lady Eagles.

Atascocita added an additional run in the 4th inning after Leah Doyle reached on from an error. Two hits later and it was 2-1 Atascocita after four. White lasted four complete innings with five strike outs for The Ridge, and Taylor Hastings took over on the mound in the 5th.

Hebert continued to keep the Lady War Eagles off balance at the plate until the 7th inning. Oak Ridge started off the 7th with a lead off walk for Carley Latta. Two fielder’s choices and a double by Alayna Ammons scored Latta to tie the game 2-2, and the game headed into extra innings.

To start off the 8th, Davila smoked another awe-inspiring lead-off home run over the left field wall and began the rally for The Ridge.  Latta loaded the bases with a walk after back to back hits from Taylor Duck and White, and a single by Hastings gave the Lady War Eagles a two-run lead. Ammons, a junior, stepped up to the plate and pelted a shot to left field clearing the bases, and Oak Ridge went into the bottom of the 7th suddenly up 7-2.

Hastings coaxed two popups and a strikeout to seal the deal. The Ridge is now 3-0 in District contests and will face the #1 state ranked Lady Highlanders of The Woodlands next Tuesday at Oak Ridge.

A pitcher’s duel ensued through three complete innings before Oak Ridge broke through with two runs in the fourth frame.

Taylor Ervin led off with a single followed by a run scoring double by Taylor Duck. White reached on an error by the third baseman which scored Duck for the second run.

Conroe battled in the 6th inning scattering three base hits but only managed to get one run across the plate. The Lady War Eagles scratched one more run in the 6th inning when junior Alayna Ammons reached base on an error by the second baseman. Back to back singles by Lauren Hoffman and Kris Davila brought in Ammons for the third run.

Lady War Eagles Get Hot in Cy Fair Tournament

The Lady War Eagle softball team participated in the Cy-Fair tournament over the weekend and brought back second place hardware.

In bracket play, Oak Ridge was undefeated, as they came out on top against MacArthur, Cy-Fair, Conroe, and Atascocita. In the final, the girls faced a ridiculous Klein Collins contingent and were defeated 10-6. Danielle White struck out five Lady Tigers in absorbing the loss for Oak Ridge. Taylor Grissom got the win on the hill for KC.

1ST INNING
The Lady War Eagles attacked in the first inning with an impressive lead off triple from senior Kris Davila  to start the championship game.  Davila scored on a fielders choice (4-3) by Taylor Duck. After a lead off K for White, the Lady Tigers answered back with a single, followed by a HR over the left field wall making the score 2-1 KC after the first inning.
2nd INNING
Taylor Hastings led off the 2nd inning with a single and scored on a triple by Carley Latta. Lauren Hoffman shot a base hit into left field scoring Latta to put 2 more runs on the board for OR in the 2nd inning. A lead off fly out and 2 K’s make it a quick inning for White and the Lady War Eagles.
3RD INNING
Danielle White powers a single to right field in the 3rd inning to begin another attack against the Lady Tigers.  Sydni Smith pinch runs for pitcher Danielle White and scores on a triple by Taylor Hastings. Latta and Hoffman each hit a single scoring Hastings. KC makes a pitching change from Taylor Atkinson to Grissom. Grissom racks up a pair of K’s to end the inning.

KC had a lead off walk, K, base hit + 2 bases on an error scoring 1. Another hit, fielders choice, and double scores another run. Pop up to SS to end the inning.
4TH INNING
Scoreless on both sides with White picking up another K.
5TH INNING
OR scoreless, but Lady Tigers go on the attack. A lead off pop up to catcher Davila started the inning off on the right foot. After a base hit and a fielders choice to create out #2, Oak Ridge seemed to have the inning under control, but the Lady Tigers were just getting started. A base hit by December Rivers and a triple by Payton Tanley began to rock the Lady War Eagles. An error allowed for another runner on the bags… runners on 1st and 3rd. The lead-off hitter for KC (Taylor Atkinson) had been fanned 3 times by White in the game, but the 4th time was a charm. She produced a power single to center scoring 2 more runs for KC.  A pop out to centerfield ends the productive inning for KC.
6TH INNING
Alayna Ammons leads off the 6th inning for Oak Ridge with a single, followed by another single by Erin Miranda. A walk to Kris Davila loads the bases. A passed ball scores Ammons and moves the runners over, but Grissom retires the side with a strike out and 2 fly outs.

After two quick outs and a walk, a double then produced a run. A play by right fielder Taylor Ervin gets the batter out at 3rd base (9-2-5).

The Lady War Eagles went scoreless in the 7th to end the game.

The KC Lady Tigers had previously beaten Oak Ridge 12-7 in the Klein ISD tournament the previous week. Oak Ridge battled back to win the consolation bracket over Splendora Wildcats in that tournament.
**3 of the top 4 finishers at this tournament were CISD schools. 1st KC, 2nd OR, 3rd Kingwood, 4th Atascocita.

KC  2-0-3-0-4-1
OR  1-2-2-0-0-1-0

WP: Taylor Grissom, 4 K’s
LP: Danielle White, 5 K’s

OR Leaders: Carley Latta 2-2, 2 Walks; Taylor Hastings 3-4 (1B, 2B, 3B – just shy of hitting for the cycle)

Other noteworthy news: Oak Ridge captured 17th place at the Bryan-College Station tournament on February 17-19. OR dropped the 2nd game to Brazoswood HS 2-1 in the tournament and battled back to win their final game over an impressive Alvin HS.  The Lady War Eagles had nice wins over Midway, Clements, Clark, Ridge Point, and Alvin High Schools.

Since Coach Brimberry has taken over this program, this is the highest placement Oak Ridge has achieved in these 3 tournaments.  17th in the BCS tournament, Consolation bracket winners (dropped first game of tourney to KC), and 2nd in the Cy-Fair tournament.

ORHS Girls Track and Field Team Off and Running

In news from girls Track & Field, at a recent meet, Miranda Bradley placed third in the high jump. Freshman standout, N’dia Warren-Jaques won the shotput. N’dia is a move-in that will also add depth to Coach Dube’s throws crew.

Oak Ridge’s Distance Medley Relay (DMR) placed fourth. The mile runners are all freshman & they ran personal bests. The 4×1, 4×2 & 4×4 looked strong as all placed well. Most impressive was junior hurdler Renee Davila running a tight race for 2nd in the 100 & placing second in the 300m hurdles. She also ran the fastest split in the 4×4 with a 60.00.

Senior Lauryn Neely & sophmore Neeka Williams ran well too! If this is a preview of Oak Ridge’s upcoming season, the Lady War Eagles will put up some great numbers at district & should get multiple girls to the regional meet in Waco!

Coach Kristin Dube is ecstatic about this young varsity squad and compliments all of the coaches for working so hard to give these athletes the best opportunity to succeed.

Expect some great things coming by way of the track this spring!

Lady War Eagles Rally Late to Top College Park 5-3

The Oak Ridge Lady War Eagles started off district play on the right foot in defeating College Park 5-3 at College Park Friday night.  Oak Ridge pitcher Taylor Hastings got the win as she fanned nine Lady Cavaliers. CP’s Julie Charbonneau absorbed the loss.

In what could be described as an ugly game, CP was holding on to a 2-1 lead when things started going Oak Ridge’s way in the seventh inning. The Lady War Eagles scored four runs on the strength of three walks, a timely bunt, a base knock with two additional bases on an error by the CP right fielder. The Lady Cavs added a run in their half of the seventh.

Other than Taylor Ervin’s stellar 4-4 hitting performance and Carly Latta’s triple, the Oak Ridge bats struggled on this night.

College Park had seven hits in all to include a Paige Thompson triple. Kayla Shows, Ashlyn French, and Haylee Stein all had doubles.

Next up for Oak Ridge is a Tuesday district tilt with Conroe at home at 6pm.

Box score:
